Sünbülzâde Mehmed Vehbî’nin Lutfiyye’sinde İş Ahlâkı

ABSTRACT

Sünbülzâde Mehmed Vehbî’s poetic work called Lutfiyye is an example of nasihatnâme (book of advice) literary genre that started to be written from early dates in Islamic world. The book includes religious and moral advices for the society as it is predominantly seen in works written in this genre. In these works, religious life is not separated from civic affairs, and morality is interpreted as Islamic morality. Lutfiyye, in particular, is not just an advice letter that deals with business ethics, but gives holistic advices about all parts of life. Yet, there is highly valuable information about the field of business ethics, which includes work and professional ethics. In his work, Vehbi not only gives moral advice, but also provides considerable information on the general situation of the Ottoman bureaucracy in his age, the holders of office and their psychology, the status of tradesmen and craftsmen, respected professions of the time, marriage and similar issues. In this article, Vehbî’s work Lutfiyye is discussed in the context of business ethics by making use of current literature. After evaluating the general characteristics of the work and its place in the literature, an analysis was carried out within the scope of business ethics.
