A Qualitative Research on Unethical Authorship in Scientific Research

Abstract

One of the unethical behaviors related to scientific research and publication ethics is unethical authorship
practices. It is purposed to determine the opinions of academicians about unethical authorship in this study. There were 49 academics in the study group of research, in which the basic qualitative research design was used. Data were collected with a semi-structured interview form. Descriptive analysis and, content analysis was used in the analysis of the data. More than half of the participants did not take any course or training on scientific research and publication ethics during their master’s or doctoral education. One-third of the academicians included any of them among the authors, even though they did not deserve it in their publications. A small group although they did not deserve it was added to the list of authors. Participants generally have information about unethical authorship and determine the author’s ranking in publications according to contribution. According to half of the academicians, unethical writing practices are common in their fields. The most common forms of unethical authorship are mutual authorship, gift/guest authorship, honorary authorship, and ghost authorship. The reasons for unethical authorship
practices are gathered under four themes: system-based reasons, the desire to rise quickly, cultural codes, and lack of knowledge or normal reception
